Dubbed the “City of Iron”, Chongjin is the capital of the North Hamgyong Province (close to the Chinese border) and the country’s third largest city. While Chongjin has been open to tourism for many years, very few tourists have the chance to actually visit due to the often decaying state of infrastructure, logistical constraints, and relatively higher costs.
Traveling from Pyongyang to Chongjin is reported to take three days by road, or 27 hours by train. Tourists must also charter an aircraft from Pyongyang and fly to the nearby Orang airport, a dual-use military airport located approximately an hours drive away.
